Emergency Relief

Christchurch Earthquake Appeal

The Glenn Family Foundation contributed $1 million to the Appeal set up by the New Zealand Government, joining other organisations and individuals worldwide who wanted to help Christchurch in the wake of the earthquakes that rocked the city in September 2010 and again in February 2011.

So far almost $100 million has been raised to help New Zealand’s second largest city recover from the devastating effects that killed 181 people. The earthquakes have led to over 1,000 buildings being tagged for demolition - including many with important heritage status. The look of this beautiful city and the lives of many, if not most, Christchurch citizens have been adversely affected in differing ways in the past year and a half.

The Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust has announced a portfolio approach that will provide funds for seven categories: sport and recreation; hardship; environment; education; spiritual and faith;economic revitalisation and heritage and culture. Almost $70 million has been assigned across these categories. The focus now is on funding high impact projects in each category. Some projects are underway: others are still emerging. The Trust is working with stakeholders in each category to understand the individual sector's priorities and opportunities.

In 2011, the Trust allocated over $15m to the following initiatives:

  • Temporary recreation hubs
  • City Mall - Restart the Heart
  • New Court Theatre premises
  • Temporary Westpac business and community hub
  • Pools in Schoolz
  • Christchurch Anglican Cathedral's feasibility study
  • Assistance and mentoring to quake-hit businesses.

Additional funding was given to other organisations and projects, including $2.8m to St John Ambulance.
