IOC President Jacques Rogge and the Minister of Sport Hon. Murray McCully Open the National Training Centre at the AUT Millennium Campus on 21 October 2011.
The centre is a part of AUT Millennium Campus, a complex of facilities privately-owned by AUT Millennium Ownership Trust, a registered charitable trust.
Summary
The National Training Centre is the result of a partnership between the Government and AUT Millennium Ownership Trust.
In 2010 the Government, via its sport and recreation agency SPARC, committed $15m to the first stage upgrade of facilities (total cost $29m). The balance of funds was provided by AUT Millennium Ownership Trust (AMOT), ASB Community Trust and donors Sir David Levene and Owen Glenn.
The SPRINZ laboratory has $2.4 million worth of new equipment. (Detailed description below)
The upgrade will significantly enhance the high performance sports training, sports science, sports medicine, research and administration facilities. Future projects include the National Aquatics Centre, facilities for indoor sports and additional accommodation.
The National Training Centre is the headquarters for the newly-created High Performance Sport New Zealand - the Government’s high performance funding and service delivery organisation.
AUT Millennium Ownership Trust is a 50:50 partnership between AUT University and Millennium Institute of Sport and Health.
AMOT is not only dedicated to high performance sport, it also has a physical activity and health, research and educational function.
AUT Millennium Ownership Trust Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mike Stanley, is also the President of the New Zealand Olympic Committee.
That relationship began when AUT University became one of two principle sponsors of the Millennium Institute of Sport and Health when it opened in 2002. AUT had exclusive educational and research rights as part of this agreement.
